Every year many persons are struck by a circulatory arrest. If no immediate help is offered they will not survive. Many cases occur outside the hostpital. So their chance to survive is completely dependent on (the skills) of avarage bystanders.

The Chain Of Survival ensures the best chance to survive a circulatory arrest. The 4 subsquent links are: alarm 1-1-2 immediately, start reanimation immediately, defibrillation as soon as possible, initiation of advanced life support as soon as possible. The chain is performed by average bystanders.

It is important that as much people as possible is familiar with this Chain Of Survival. If many persons have skill in resuscitation and in the use of the automated external defibrillator, a far better chance on survival of e victim of circularory arrest will me likely.

Appropriate resuscitation consists of sequences of 30 thoracic compressions and 2 artificial breathings, to be performed by 1 bystander, every 2 minutes relieved by a second bystander.

Resuscitation ensures a kind of artificial circulation, providing the transport of oxygen to the tissues; brain and heart muscle cells need it most. In circulatory arrest a chaotic electric activity (fibrillation) in the heart often plays a role. This chaotic activity is often only to be ended through defibrillation: a high energy electric shock at the heart, ending the fibrillation and offering the heart the opportunity to start its own pace rythm again. Early and appropriate ogygen supply of the heart muscle by resucitation shortly after the onset of the circulatory arrest is essential fos the succes rate of application of the AED.

Mr. Toine Korthout MD is an ERC-certified AED- and resuscitation instructor. If you consider to join a course to learn or to update resuscitation according to the newest 2006 NRR-guidelines, please write an e-mail. We will be glad to find the most suitable modus for you. Course can be given in several languages.
